What is an electronic laboratory notebook (ELN)?

An electronic laboratory notebook, or ELN, is a type of software that is designed to capture experimental protocol information, e.g. synthetic protocols and procedures. An ELN acts as the first stop for your data in the lab, providing you with tools to organize and retain information necessary to replicating an experiment, or simply to organize your thoughts and methods.

The BioPACIFIC MIP ELN is designed to be a general purpose utility for data entry. The editor (described in more detail on a subsequent page) is relatively free-form, and minimal demands are placed on the user with respect to how they format their notebook pages. The ELN also provides mechanisms by which you can link data between the notebook and the LIMS, further reducing the amount of data entry required to upload experimental data to the BioPACIFIC MIP digital ecosystem.
